Breast Implant Removal
Conveniently located to serve Brookline
Breast implant removal, or explant surgery, is a procedure used to take out breast implants. Breast implant removal in Brookline happens for a number of reasons. The removal may be done due to the implant leaking or rupturing, capsular contracture or simply the patient’s desire to increase or decrease the size of the implant or adjust the shape.
Breast implant removal may be necessary to correct other problems which can occur with implants such as the implants shifting, wrinkling, sagging, or being asymmetrical. The body can also have an adverse reaction to the implants sometimes and this can cause infection, bleeding, necrosis, or calcium deposits. Complications are rare, but as with any surgical procedure and any procedure that involves putting a foreign object in the body, there are risks. Breast implant removal surgery is necessary from time to time. Stay vigilant in your check-ups so that if a problem does occur, it can be resolved in a timely manner.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Implant Removal
If you are interested in having your implants removed for any of the reasons mentioned above, you may be recommended for this procedure. Ideal candidates for breast implant removal are in good physical health overall and have a stable weight. Candidates should also be non-smokers and have realistic expectations.

- Written onFebruary 1, 2016 BEST SURGEON EVER!!!! I did a lot of research before requesting a consultation with Dr. Darrow and when I first met with him I knew he was the doctor for me. His MA Helen is also a peach and just amazing as well. Dr. Darrow made the process less intimidating and calm. I am so glad I went through with the procedure. I did not require drains and I am also 2 weeks post op and have been healing great! I’m due to finally go bra shopping this upcoming weekend and I cannot wait. He is an amazing doctor and I STRONGLY RECOMMEND him!
The Procedure
In the event that a breast implant removal is necessary the procedure will be done under general or local anesthesia with IV sedation, just like the breast augmentation procedure. This procedure, however, generally takes around half an hour to complete. It may take longer if the removal procedure is more complex due to factors such as hardened skin tissue.
The incision will be made under the breast or around the nipple usually and the implants will be carefully removed. After removal, revision, or replacement of the implants, Dr. Darrow will close the incisions with sutures. The surgical sites will then be covered in dressings or bandages.
The Breast Implant Removal Recovery Period
During recovery, the patient must follow aftercare instructions closely for faster healing. Directions on how to avoid putting pressure on the breast area should be carefully followed; this can include changes in sleep positions and daily posture.
Medications and surgical bras may be required as part of recovery. Follow-up appointments with Dr. Darrow will be needed to evaluate the condition of the patient’s incisions following implant removal.
The Cost of Breast Implant Removal
The cost of breast implant removal will be based on the individualized treatment plan. The overall price will include surgical, anesthetic, and facility fees. If the procedure is done out of medical necessity due to the health risks of the breast implants, insurance may cover its cost.
